The character of Godzilla has survived over the decades by endlessly reinventing itself. Shin Godzilla (2016) is Godzilla taken back to its horror routes. This time, Godzilla isn't so much a villain as an almost literal engine of destruction. Much of its personality has given way to something more immense and alien. That constant reinvention is given a post-modern take, as it becomes a key element of Shin Godzilla, constantly adapting and changing to stimulus. Taking him down is less a matter of brute force or daring-do, and more about a highly coordinated and cooperative effort of the part of the Japanese government.
