This year's theme was 31 years of Halloween. I took one movie from each year, 1985 to 2015. It was interesting to take a single sample and try and get some idea how the horror genre shifted over that period of time. A popular notion is that horror lost it's edge in 90s, I'm not sure that is necessarily true. Mainstream horror might have become watered down, but the genre had fully embraced home video at that point, and it's there that some of the more interesting work lives. The unrest and uncertainty of the early 2000s resulted in a resurgence in mean-spirited horror and social media brought about the rise of the found footage. By the decade mark, horror was looking backward as much as it was looking forward, with homages and retro aesthetics.
